There’s a well-spun yarn Menno Boldt likes to tell.

Six years ago, he stepped into an arts and crafts store in Langley and came across a set of plastic rings, each with dozens of small shafts sticking up in one direction.

It was his first look at a hand loom.

“It’s called a Nifty Knitter. It comes in four different sizes,” says the 78-year-old. “I said to my wife, ‘I could learn to knit on one of those things.’ ”

Before long, he learned to knit infant and adult wool hats and shawls while watching TV (mostly sports) in his leather Lay-Z-Boy in in South Surrey home.

One day, he recalls, “I heard a whisper.”.......
