Contemporary Beadwork in Ukraine Presentation and Trunk Show – June 2, 2009 at 7:00 pm

May 23, 2009 – The Ukrainian National Museum is pleased to invite you to a presentation of “Contemporary Beadwork in Ukraine” and Trunk Show on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 7:00 pm by Maria Rypan.

Maria Rypan will present her new PowerPoint "Contemporary Beadwork in Ukraine" gleaned from four trips to Ukraine, two in the past year. Her Trunk Show of Rypan Designs includes beadwork kits, patterns and books.  Nastasiya Marusyk-Zhmendak will display her “gerdany” beadwork necklaces and bead-embroidered Ukrainian blouses or “sorochky”

from her Bukovynian collection.

You will have the pleasure of meeting both the artists and authors of new Ukrainian beadwork books; Maria Rypan and Nastasiya Marusyk –Zhmendak.

Maria Rypan’s fascinating PowerPoint will include a presentation of beadwork from Ukraine. See master craftsmen’s homes with beadwork in progress as well as finished masterpieces. Learn about historic (XIX to mid XX centuries) and contemporary beadwork. See unique methods to create traditional motifs, and marvel at shirts, overskirt wraps and vests that are completely beaded! Finally you will be able to observe various techniques of loom weaving ranging from fashionable medallions and swags to a 300-warp thread window frame loom for a beaded landscape.

The Ukrainian National Museum is located in the heart of the Ukrainian Village, at 2249 West Superior Street in Chicago. Hours: Thursday through Sunday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Monday through Wednesday by appointment only. Admission: Adults $5.00, Children under 12 - Free.
