China invades Indian handicraft market

China reproduces the Indian traditional hand-made products and exports it back to India, said Chairman of Exports Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) Mr. R.K. Malhotra. Almost all the major handicraft items in metal, wood-ware, jute as well as toys are being imported from China.
Indian people engaged in handicrafts business say that China has invaded the Indian markets with their duplicate machine-made craft items manufactured on a big volume. According to EPCH data, in 2007-08 India imported Rs. 1,040.03 crore worth of China-made handicraft items, which stood at Rs. 792.98 crore in the year 2006-07.
Chinese manufacturers also send their machine-made craft items to the global market giving tough competition to Indian suppliers as these machine-made products are low priced compared to that of Indian hand-made crafts......
