The strength of Nnenna Okore’s works lies in their fragility. These delicately woven sculptures from small things are not your usual heavy metal or wood, generally associated with sculpting, but works borne out of baked clay, sticks, burlap, recycled newspapers and materials that normally would be considered worthless.
To understand this minimalist and naturalist approach to her art, one has to take into consideration Okore’s background. She studied under the renowned sculptor El Anatsui at Nsukka; this has really influenced the weaver-bird poetry inherent in her works.....
