Leather craftsman sends out call for new blood

Many times, the roots of creative endeavors sprout by happenstance.

For Chris Howard, 38, of Grand Rapids, the process involved Renaissance re-enactment and a Japanese comic book character.

His creative journey began in 1997 when, while working at a tree nursery in Fresno, Calif., he decided to join a Renaissance re-enactment group.

"You can't go to a fair and not pick up a bunch of hobbies," Howard said, explaining the crafty addictions he immediately developed....
