Jewelry artist makes the most of her summertime haven

Susan Barker hammers both shape and texture into one of her silver pieces.
Years ago, the chauffeur for a wealthy family in a Boathouse Row mansion parked his car in the garage and lived a modest life in its attached studio apartment. The chauffeur’s garage today is a summertime haven for artist Susan K. Barker.
Barker, a full-time resident of Dublin, N.H., summered in Westport as a child. Her father built one of the houses on the mansion’s estate, and Barker retained the chauffeur’s garage for herself, turning it into an artist’s oasis of easy summer living.
Barker makes jewelry out of assorted and antique beads and sterling silver, some covered in 24 karat gold, stringing up unique designs that reflect her love of nature. She uses many leaf designs, an homage to her years as a horticultural judge for the Garden Club of America, and also incorporates animals......
