Woodcarver passes on craft as labor of love

WILLIAMSTON --- It doesn't take much time around Emma Malcangi to gather that she's passionateabout woodcarving.

One look at her creations -- some with a religious motif, some whimsical, some thematic -- reflects the intricacy, care and skill she brings to each piece.

At the Williamston "Dog Days" event Aug. 7, Malcangi, who practices her art in Dansville but has shown her work at several events in Williamston, was holding forth in front of Williamston True Value Hardware with her array of 50-some different chisels, explaining to co-owner Barb VandenBerg and various passers-by the intricacies of woodcarving.

"It's a dying art -- people don't have the time, and use a chainsaw," she said. "In Italy, it's all by hand."......
