Mayan pottery inspires exhibit

Take a trip around the world and back home again during a visit to The Creative Center’s Jon Ginsburg Gallery. From Mayan-inspired ceramics and framed Asian art to pencil drawings of fellow students and acrylic paintings of familiar garden delights, the “Far and Near” art show is sure to please.

“Far and Near” is a showcase for Mayan-inspired ceramic work by Creative Center students.

After looking through art history books, the students were interested in making Mayan bowls that have three feet, teacher Constance Tippett said.

“The students used the Mayan pottery as a springboard for their own creativity,” she said.

They used the ancient technique of engobe, an underglaze that combines a slip of clay with natural colorants such as umber or copper carbonate. This technique was used by Mayans, Greeks and Romans, Tippett says......
