Hundreds of pieces featured at annual wood carving competition and show

PICKERING -- For Brian Ashmore, wood carving is about creating something from nothing.

PICKERING -- The Ontario Wood Carvers held its 30th annual competition and show at the Pickering Recreation Complex on the weekend. Carver Phyllis Spencer whittled away her time carving a puppy during the show. September 26, 2009.

“All you need is a block of wood and a knife, and you can have a piece of art,” the Oshawa senior said.

Mr. Ashmore took up carving about 20 years ago, as something to fill the free time of retirement. Now, it’s more passion, than hobby.

He was one of hundreds of carvers who gathered at the Pickering Recreation Complex this weekend for ‘Magic in Wood’, the Ontario Wood Carvers Association’s 30th annual competition and show......

  1. Hi Brian: Remember "Sam" and Walter. Nice to see you are wood working. One day we'd love to see some of your work.

    How is everyone in your family - Brenda, Cheryl and Michael? Heidi and Geoff are married now and we have three grandchildren. We're still living a the farm. We are in our 30th year of Bee-Keeping and last year we extracted twenty two thousand pounds of honey. This year wasn't as good to us, as the weather was cold.

    just found your response to the carveing show last year in pickering

    the kids are just fine cheryl and tony have the only three grandkids in our family

    two girls and a boy , mike got married eight years ago in new york and lives in the big smoke

    at the beaches

    glad to hear you have grandkids keeps you young dont it .
