Woodcarving corner:Ugly stumps transformed into one-of-a-kind work of art

Glasgow Road and Hickman Street have a few new residents, and since they're made of wood they'll at least be quiet neighbours.
Lori Schickedanz commissioned Jeff Taylor, 20, of Barrie, to make the ugly stumps marring her lawn into a work of art after seeing the job he did for a family on Glasgow Road. Taylor is relatively new to woodcarving, but his work clearly impressed Schickedanz, who enthused, "What a talent!"
"It was a hobby and now it's kind of what I do for a living," said Taylor, who was introduced to carving by a friend who worked in soapstone. "I'm just self taught. Been doing it for about three years... I just started carving animals and I got hooked."
Taylor's carvings started out in soapstone and graduated to small woodcarvings until he eventually took up the large scale chainsaw carving......
