Hale Makua residents sew project to support troops overseas

KAHULUI - A project aimed at bringing Christmas cheer to U.S. troops overseas has drawn a highly motivated crowd of residents and staff at Hale Makua in Kahului.

"It's right up there with bingo," said activities director Teresa Lopes of the popularity of a Christmas stockings project her staff launched this week with Hale Makua residents. "Bingo is our residents' number one activity, and I would say this one is right up there with it. I think it's because it's so meaningful."

Hale Makua residents and staff are coming together this month with sewing machines, scissors and lots of smiles as they create Christmas stockings at the Kahului nursing home. The project is being carried out in collaboration with Keystone Soldiers, a national nonprofit volunteer organization based in Pennsylvania. It supports U.S. military personnel by coordinating the creation and delivery of donated care packages, letters and cards of support from around the country.

Packages go to all branches of the military and to locations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Korea. The packages also are delivered to any other troops who request support from home. Items are sorted and packed according to the requests Keystone Soldiers gets from the troops or their families.....
