Handmade quilt draws raves

After collecting t-shirts from all over North America and quilting for 80 hours, a Mitchell woman created a very unique item to help charity.

Micaela Fitzsimmons is a textile artist, a fan of the band U2 and a fan of humanitarian Stephen Lewis. When she learned that Into the Heart, the annual U2 fan festival held in Toronto, was going to donate proceeds from this year's event to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, she decided to donate something extra-special for auction.

"That's when I decided to put some real energy in it," said Fitzsimmons, who has attended and volunteered at Into the Heart for several years.

This year Fitzsimmons asked fellow U2 fans to send her their U2 t-shirts and received more than 20, from Niagara Falls, Chicago, Cleveland and as far away as Washington state. The finished project measures about 6.5 by seven-feet, and is a vibrant illustration of the rock band's multi-decade career. The quilt went on auction November 7 during a performance by three U2 cover bands and raised $850 for the charity, which works to combat the effects of HIV/AIDS in Africa......
