Students’ knitted hats are expressions of love

Once the school day is over, the cosmetology students at Robert Morgan Educational Center in Southwest Miami-Dade trade in their hairbrushes and blow dryers for looms and yarn.

The 115 students -- many of whom are involved in the Leo Club, a youth volunteer organization run by the Lions Club International -- have been crocheting hats for Miami's youngest cancer patients.

``Teens are so concerned with their self-gratification, I wanted to teach them the joy of giving back,'' said Michael Stahl, a cosmetology teacher and the Leo Club sponsor. ``It has really worked.''

Since Stahl began the crocheting project three years ago, his students have donated more than 300 hats to Miami Children's Hospital and 100 to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood.....
