Family Clay Day is a monthly hit at Clay Works

Family Clay Day provides community members a place to engage in worthwhile and enjoyable projects at its Main Street, Poughkeepsie facility.

Since opening in 2005, Barrett Clay Works on Main Street in Poughkeepsie has provided a creative, educational and motivational atmosphere for both local residents and those from surrounding communities. Hosting a regular schedule of classes, it also makes studio space available to artisans and hosts exhibits in its gallery.
Lauren Aitken became an artist-in-residence at Barrett Clay Works in May 2009 and was recently named its director. She holds degrees in ceramics and art education from SUNY New Paltz.
“We really believe that Barrett Clay Works is a huge asset to the community,” Aitken said. “We are trying to get the facilities up to date, to get kilns installed and to market the center to local residents. A lot of people don’t know that we are here.
“It’s a beautiful facility that has a lot of potential. We brought in some really good people who volunteer their time to keep it open.”
About 20 artisans currently rent space at the center and work there regularly. ....
