The UK Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef

9 January - 10 February 2010

firstsite is delighted to present the UK contribution to an international project: The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef.

The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project was created and developed by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring in Los Angeles. The UK Reef is supported by the Crafts Council and is one of an ever-expanding group of Satellite Reefs around the world that are adjuncts to the Core Collection of Institute for Figuring Reefs. For further information please see www.theiff.org

Hyberbolic crochet was developed in 1997 by Dr. Daina Taimina, a professor at Cornell University. She astounded the scientific world by realising the first physical model of a hyperbolic plane using crocheted wool. The Wertheim sisters used the same mathematical technique to create the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef; crochet is perfect for making coral as the hyperbolic way it increases has the same appearance as the real thing. The project is a direct response to the plight of coral reef, which is under threat from pollution and global warming.....
