Handmade Nation

Faythe Levine, founder of Milwaukee’s independent craft fair, Art vs. Craft, will present her hour-long documentary, Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft, and Design, followed by a discussion. by Andrea Appleton

If the crafting world had celebrities, Faythe Levine would be on the A-list. The founder of Milwaukee's independent craft fair, Art vs. Craft, has been called "the ambassador of handmade" by The New York Times. In 2006, she traveled the country and interviewed 80 members of the growing craft community. Levine will present the resulting hour-long documentary, Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft, and Design, followed by a discussion. Among the interviewees: a group of Texas knitters who tag with textiles rather than spray paint and a woman who designs kits for making hook rugs adorned with naked ladies.
