Pajaro Valley Quilt Association’s 32nd annual Quilt Show embraces ecology

WATSONVILLE -- For more than 30 years, members of the Pajaro Valley Quilt Association have mastered the craft and art of quilting, but they are always up for learning something new. This weekend, the association will hold its 32nd annual quilt show at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds with a current theme: "It's easy being green."

"Santa Cruz has a very green tradition," said PVQA co-chair Iris Frank. "And part of the quilting tradition was to recycle and make quilts with what you already had."

Hence the 2010 slogan : "Reuse, Recycle, Renew."

This year, the show will feature almost 400 quilts, all related to environmental issues and concerns. The main focus of the show will be the Judge's Choice Award, given by five local leaders from the recycling community to their favorite "green quilt."

As every year, PVQA will invite a featured artist to talk about a specific kind of quilting. This year will feature Allison Aller, a Washington, D.C., quilter who became known for her crazy quilting -- a specific quilting style rooted in the Victorian era -- and teaches classes across the nation, Frank said......
