Learn to design traditional quilts

ONANCOCK -- A quilt-making workshop led by Lois Sprague will offer students the opportunity to construct a quilt top of traditional designs. Each of 12 squares comprising the quilt top will be a different pattern used in making quilts during earlier times in American history.

The quilt top will be about 60 by 76 inches and can be made into a quilt that is sure to become a family heirloom or a special gift. The workshop is sponsored by The Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society as part of its 2010 Education Program.

Sprague is a local quilter with a studio in the Onancock School on College Avenue in Onancock. The historic pattern quilt workshop will be held in her studio and is scheduled for four days over a two-week period: April 6, 8, 13, and 15. The cost of the workshop is $250, which includes the fabric to make the quilt top. Each student will need a sewing machine and must know how to use it.

Space is limited in this unique workshop and preregistration is required. To reserve a spot in the quilt making workshop, please contact the Historical Society, 757-787-8012 or e-mail kerplace@veri zon.net
