Crochet:Watch a textile artist work

Bjarnadóttir creates a piece. HLYNUR HELGASON

by Linda Luise Brown

Internationally recognized Hildur Bjarnadóttir, one of Iceland's leading textile artists, is coming to Charlotte over the next few days. Her appearance is part of the Mint Museum's innovative Project Ten Ten Ten, a series of commissioned, site-specific artworks for the opening of the Mint Museum Uptown later this year.

Bjarnadóttir converts the traditionally feminine materials of hand-wrought crochet, knitting and weaving into works of art that diametrically oppose our expectations of what these crafts can be, going well beyond the memories of our grandmothers' tatting. With the tease of the high art woven into craft, this artist skillfully turns the feminine into the feminist.
