‘Patterns of our Heritage’ celebrate the art of quilt making

Dubbed “The World’s Largest Quilt” at 18’x21’ it may also be the most traveled quilt. Since its creation in 1980, the quilt has been to The World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tenn., Washington D.C., Charlotte, N.C., Lexington Ky., Cincinnati, Ohio; Reading Pa., New York, N.Y., Greenville, S.C., Asheville, N.C. and Augusta, Ga.

In 1980, Governor Jim Hunt signed a proclamation declaring Franklin, N.C. as the “Quilting Capital of the World.” That tradition has been preserved and is being expanded in a major way. Maco Crafts, a non-profit cooperative that operated from 1969- 2001, produced many quilts, but three unique creations have continued to draw admirers and to promote Macon County.

These three quilts, after many years, are now re-united in Franklin, and will be welcomed home at a special showing on April 17. Called “Patterns of our Heritage,” this event will feature the quilts, but will also have various exhibits that show how the quiltmaking tradition is not only being preserved, but is expanding and evolving into an important part of our economy......
