Making the Most of Mother’s Day

Papermaking class, August, 2009 -- Students "couching" sheets of paper ready to press them.

Mother's Day is around the corner, and The Jacksonville Center has many opportunities to create one-of-a-kind gifts or share the experience of mother/child creative learning.

During the first weekend in May, students can create linoleum block prints with Kate Anderson, glass memory necklaces with Tammy Parks, soapstone sculptures with Sue Brozovsky, raku pottery with Steve Mitchell or learn the basics of blacksmithing in Jessie Ward's Two Days in May class.

Mother's Day weekend offers two classes that are part of the Friends and Family Two-for-One tuition special. James Quinn will be guiding students through the basics of creating primitive metal jewelry in his weekend class, while Katherine Devine will be exploring the ancient tradition of women teaching women creative arts in her Mother-Daughter Mixed Media Workshop. Teri Walters will also have a Mother's Day weekend class where she will guide students in making colorful beads out of polymer clay.

Class sizes are limited, and registration closes two weeks before each class begins, so register now. Members of The Jacksonville Center receive a 20% discount on tuition for most classes. Those with limited financial resources can apply to be a part of the work-study program, in which class hours can be earned through work hours at the center.
