It’s been two summers and I’m still really, really into anything that even remotely resembles a friendship bracelet.

Now, the wicked talented Erica Domesek–she of our favorite DIY website, PS- I Made This–has created a rope necklace that I just can’t resist.

Domesek partnered with adorable boutique Tauk–in Montauk, obviously–to release a limited edition run of the macrame necklaces she’s been wearing all summer. And yes, she made them. Each is handwoven with string, bright ropes, and ultra suede.

I’m partial to the navy, black, and white, but let’s be real, they’re all cute. I’m heading out to Montauk in two weeks, which means my first stop will be Tauk. And at $80, it won’t drain me of spending money.

1 Ladybug button

2 Daisy flower buttons

Scissors

Vangie Collins always admired glass beads and jewelry.

And when she lost her beloved Schnauzer mix, Rudy, in 2001, she was asked by a fellow-animal-loving owner if she could incorporate the pet’s remains into a glass memorial bead.

“My answer was yes,” said Collins, from her south Nashua home. “I did some investigating and some research online, and I decided to experiment. And it just so happened that I had a small amount of remains from when my dog Rudy passed away in 2001. So the first cremation bead that I made was my own. It was a very moving experience for me.”

Collins said that it was unlike anything that she had ever done.

“It was something so special, so it went from there and I started showing some of my Rudy beads at shows, and one thing led to another and I’m now making my own cremation beads.”.....

Falls Church Arts member, Cathy Kaye, will discuss the art of lampwork beadmaking at the Artists Roundtable meeting on Thursday, June 24, at 7 pm at ArtSpace Falls Church, 410 S. Maple Avenue. The talk is free and open to everyone.

Cathy has been a glass beadmaker (also known as a lampworker) since 1996. After starting out stringing beads and making jewelry, Cathy changed her focus when, “at a bead show I saw a demonstration of lampworking and that was it . . . beads and FIRE, what could be better!”

Cathy’s current work centers on creating groups of beads to work in specific ”signature pieces” of jewelry. She also creates items like cheese knives and wine stoppers that can be used to bring beads to every aspect of daily life. “An unsuspected bit of whimsy. . . that’s what I think beadmaking is all about!”

Cathy has been featured in the coffee table book 1,000 Glass Beads and has had beads on display in the National Bead Museum, which was dismantled and moved to Arizona when the National’s stadium was built. Her work has also been featured in local stores and in many trunk shows.

Yes lads, according to that bastion of all things buttoned up and Tag wearing, the latest accessories trend to hit the mannery market: Bracelets–in all their beaded, bangled and charmed glory. “Not to be confused with the charity wristband fad started by Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong campaign in 2004,” the paper reports–pointing to a surge in popularity among well-togged hommes, “these accessories are instead an update of the backpacker souvenirs and friendship bracelets of adolescence.”

And by update, they mean a more expensive version designed to represent an man’s inner irreverence as tokens of the life that happens outside of one’s Gucci suit and tie. “I used to be a sailor, and each year my mother would give me a red bracelet for luck......

Hand-made in the designer's native Philippines, these painstakingly conceived and executed compositions stand testament to her philosophy of 'Just one bead at a time'. Named after Iris, the ancient Greek's messenger of the gods, this necklace projects a divine charisma. Tiered discs of orange and gray agate are ringed with globular and tubular beads to form seven opalescent clusters, diminishing in size from the centre outwards. Joined to each end of this assembly, blackened metal links close the circle; faceted conical crystals provide sparkling accents. Use the extender section to adjust the necklace's length, then secure with the lobster-claw clasp.

All elements are finished with padded backs for a comfortable fit; flexible construction contours the design closely to your body. Piece is supplied in a sumptuous faux-lizard skin presentation box with silky fabric lining and Bea Valdes brass nameplate.
