Ah, those pesky boys. They're always so difficult to make stuff for, and, as it turns out, they're even more difficult to design projects for. I always try to think up stuff that blokes might fancy having a go at, but I must admit to getting carried away with knitted clutch bags and decoupage high heels over the last few months.

It's not just me, though: all too often chaps get left out of craft. Project books are typically full of sparkly pink flowery handmade things, and although there is the odd one that tries to redress the balance (think Debbie Stoller's Son of a Stitch 'n Bitch), the guys usually end up with a raw deal (or another duct tape wallet for a birthday present).

But look hard enough and you'll find that there are some brilliant male crafters out there. Craig and Gerald over at I Knit in Waterloo, London, do a sterling job at their yarn shop-cum-bar......

But one solution could be the Revamp and Recycle classes held at Chameleon Workshop in Queen's Road East (Tel: 2527-2251).

The art studio is offering new eco- courses on how to brighten up your home without spending a dime on new furniture. There is a class for parents and kids to learn how to give their home furniture or fittings new life.

"It'd be exciting to spend some quality time with your kid to do something new," said studio director Eleanor McColl, who has a newborn baby.

"Parents can revamp their child's bedroom together. As the kids grow older, they might want to get rid of the Teletubbies or fairies in their room. So instead of buying a new lamp or new curtain, the parents and kids can come here, learn the skills, and slowly create a new look at home.".....

I am not generally a crafty person, but a few days back I told you how I had decoupaged my coffee table. Well, I finally finished up the project last night and I had to show you the finished result.

This ended up being a little bit more difficult than I thought because the table is round. Once I placed the paper and got it lined up the way I wanted, I stuck it to the table with Modge Podge and made sure that there was some overhang on all sides. Then, I cut slits in the paper all around the table and folded the sections underneath one by one. I put about five coats of the glue on this and then finished it with a Polycrylic finish for protection......

There will always be a place for a handwritten note or beautiful card to cheer someone along in life. To enjoy this personal art of communication, the key is to have everything you need within reach and an assortment of pretty stationery to filter through and decide who gets what.

We converted a wonderful hinged wooden box into a decorative, antique-looking stationery gift for Mother’s Day.

The portability of this box is ideal for taking one’s letter-writing to the outdoors or even to bed at night to jot a few words down to loved ones before you drift off.......

Make old shoes look better than new.

Craf isn't always about thrift. Of course, sometimes it is cheaper to buy the materials and knock up a dress/birthday card/cushion cover by hand, but if all you are interested in is saving a bit of cash, you'd be better off going to Primark for a jumper than trying to knit one from scratch.

No, making stuff yourself isn't necessarily about getting something for less money. It's about getting something that you absolutely, 100% want, rather than having to settle for a close approximation of that perfect bag/rug/picture frame, because it's all you could find on the high street.

I've been trawling said high street for a while now and, as I should have realised at the beginning of my search, the pair of shoes that I want just don't exist at the moment. Not in the places I shop, anyway.

The solution? To make my own, of course.......
